About the Indicators Framework

B-Sustainable uses a sustainability indicators framework to make a wealth of information meaningful, accessible, and actionable. MEANINGFUL: The framework offers a dynamic systems understanding of sustainability as a context for taking values-based action. ACCESSIBLE: Information is made timely and relevant to users’ needs through multiple points of access – such as stories, maps, graphs, and linkages. ACTIONABLE: The indicators are chosen to measure progress towards sustainability through potential courses of action for different users.

The framework is organized around 16 sustainability goals defined by indicators that answer the questions: What is happening? Why is it happening? And why is it important? Typically, a goal has a set of 10 to 12 indicators. An indicator can be shared by more than one goal.  In addition, each goal is linked to strategies and actions. A  schematic of the framework is shown below.
